MissUnderstanding recounts “the story that took place this afternoon” and attempts to distinguish illusions from memories in order to restore the truth of that story. The director steps away from language and culture itself to explore, in an instinctive and thrillingly subtle way, the absurdity of life. * If you want to describe what is happening at a given moment: one second late and it becomes a memory; one second too early and it is an omen. It is hard to ignore the flaws of memory. A single second’s difference between two recollections of the same moment can lead to a misunderstanding. However slight that gap of one second may be, it will keep widening, and within a year the memory will grow more and more inaccurate. And we become less and less certain of where we stand. And I find myself drawing on the constant distortions of memory, slipping endlessly into its gaps. The director Shuyi Liao Shuyi Liao is the co-founder of the Beijing Contact Improvisation Festival and the Touch Contact Improvisation Festival. She is passionate about various forms of research on body movement and is also a very active physical-theater performer. She has a long-standing partnership with the Hong Kong Luye theater (which performs at the Beijing Youth Theatre Festival, the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, the Guangzhou Grand Theatre, etc.) and with the Beijing Fei-Tong theater, among others. Her main productions include: Orphan 2.0, Sonnet, A Short Length, Snow Eyes, and Wa Wa Wa, Hua!.
